## What does this symbol mean?

A circle containing M is a common simplified symbol for an electric motor. It can appear in schematics, one-line diagrams and plan legends, but not every standard or project uses the same graphic. The drawing type and project legend control the intended meaning.

The motor symbol identifies an equipment function, not its complete specification. Use the device tag and motor or equipment schedule to find AC or DC type, phases, voltage, power, full-load current, starter, overload protection and connection details.

## See the symbol

![Teaching motor symbol with the letter M inside a circle, two connection lines and device tag M1.](https://elect-learn.org/images/reference/motor.svg)

A common simplified motor mark used in teaching and some drawings. The tag, legend and motor schedule define the actual machine and ratings.

## How to read it in context

1. Identify the drawing type: a one-line may compress a multiphase supply, while a control schematic can place the motor, starter coil and auxiliary contacts on separate sheets.
2. Match the motor tag—such as M1—to the motor schedule, load list and referenced detail.
3. Trace power and control references separately. A line entering the motor symbol does not reveal every physical conductor, terminal or cable route.
4. Use manufacturer data and the approved project documents for rotation, terminal links, duty, enclosure and protection requirements.

## Common look-alikes and mistakes

- A generator can also be drawn as a letter inside a circle. Read the letter, tag, power-flow context and legend rather than relying on the circle alone.
- A motor controller, starter, contactor or variable-frequency drive is not the motor itself and can be shown with a different symbol or equipment tag.
- The symbol does not establish the motor's present rotation, energized state, phase sequence, isolation or safe work condition.
- A single motor mark can omit windings, thermal devices, brakes, sensors and auxiliaries documented elsewhere.

## Try the symbol-reading check

A one-line diagram shows M1 as a circle containing M. What does that symbol establish by itself?

It identifies a motor function tagged M1 in that drawing. It does not establish phases, voltage, power, starter type, overload settings, conductor size, field state or safe isolation; those require the legend, schedules, equipment data and approved verification.

## Standards, sources and related symbols

These are independently drawn teaching diagrams. They help you read a drawing, but the project legend, applicable standard and equipment documentation control the actual meaning. Editorial source check: 29 October 2026.
