Capacitor Symbol: Polarized vs Non-Polarized Diagrams

Read the basic capacitor symbol, distinguish polarized and non-polarized variants, and use reference designators, polarity marks and the drawing legend before identifying a component.

Page highlights

  • Read the basic capacitor symbol, distinguish polarized and non-polarized variants, and use reference designators, polarity marks and the drawing legend before identifying a component.
  • Original symbol illustrations, a reading check and feedback for learning.

What does this symbol mean?

A basic capacitor symbol uses two separated plates in the circuit path. It represents capacitance, not the physical size or construction of the component.

A polarized capacitor needs additional polarity information, often a plus mark or a polarized-symbol variant. The schematic, bill of materials and component datasheet must agree before a part is identified.

See the symbol

Non-polarized capacitor symbol made from two separated parallel plates.
A generic non-polarized capacitor symbol. Polarized variants add polarity information or use a curved plate convention.

How to read it in context

  1. Find the reference designator, commonly beginning with C, and the stated capacitance value.
  2. Check for a polarity mark, voltage rating, dielectric note or component callout.
  3. Read the connections around the symbol to understand the circuit role; the icon alone does not tell you the function.

Common look-alikes and mistakes

  • Two equal plates normally indicate a generic non-polarized representation; it does not authorize substituting any capacitor type.
  • A plus mark identifies polarity, not a higher-value terminal in every operating condition.
  • A capacitor symbol can look similar across power and electronics drawings while the ratings and hazards differ greatly.

Try the symbol-reading check

A capacitor symbol has a plus mark near one plate. What is the safe interpretation?

Check answer and feedback

Treat it as polarity information and verify the component datasheet and schematic notes. The mark does not provide capacitance, voltage rating or a replacement specification.

Standards, sources and related symbols

These are independently drawn teaching diagrams. They help you read a drawing, but the project legend, applicable standard and equipment documentation control the actual meaning. Editorial source check: 27 October 2026.
