Limit Switch Symbol: Actuator & Contacts

Read a limit switch symbol with its lever or roller actuator, and separate the drawn contact state from the switch's mechanical action.

Page highlights

  • Read a limit switch symbol with its lever or roller actuator, and separate the drawn contact state from the switch's mechanical action.
  • Original symbol illustrations, a reading check and feedback for learning.

What does this symbol mean?

A limit switch is actuated by mechanical movement rather than by a person pressing a button. Its symbol combines a switch contact with an actuator mark such as a plunger, a lever or a roller, showing what physically operates the contacts.

The contact is drawn in the documented reference state, so an open contact in the drawing does not mean the machine is stopped or the switch is unactuated now. Actuator shape, contact form, travel and ratings come from the schedule and datasheet.

How to read it in context

  1. Identify the actuator mark (plunger, lever, roller) and read the device tag beside it.
  2. Read the contact in its documented reference state and note whether it is NO or NC.
  3. Trace the control circuit to see what the switch starts, stops or interlocks, using the same device tag.
  4. Use the schedule and datasheet for actuation point, travel, contact form and ratings; the drawn state is documentation, not proof of the machine's position.

Common look-alikes and mistakes

  • A limit switch and a push button both change contact state, but one is operated by machine movement and the other by a person; the actuator mark separates them.
  • A roller, a plunger and a lever are different actuator types and are not interchangeable in every application.
  • The drawn open contact does not prove the machine is at a safe position or that motion has stopped.
  • A limit switch used for position sensing is not automatically a safety-rated device; that requires the safety function documentation.

Try the symbol-reading check

A control schematic shows a limit switch drawn open with a roller actuator. What does that establish?

Check answer and feedback

It establishes a limit switch with a roller actuator whose contact is drawn open in the reference state. It does not establish the machine's present position, the actuation point, contact ratings or a safe condition; those require the schedule, datasheet and approved verification.

Standards, sources and related symbols

These are independently drawn teaching diagrams. They help you read a drawing, but the project legend, applicable standard and equipment documentation control the actual meaning. Editorial source check: 29 October 2026.
